How to Keep Your Pet Safe During Macau Typhoon Season

Typhoon Season in Macau

Macau's typhoon season runs from May to October, with the most intense storms typically occurring in August and September. While you may be familiar with the Typhoon Signal system, have you considered how to keep your pets safe when a storm strikes? At Royal Veterinary Center, we see an increase in pet emergencies during and after typhoons — preparation is key.

Understanding the Signal System

  • Signal 1 (Standby) — a tropical cyclone is within 800km; stay alert
  • Signal 3 (Strong Wind) — strong winds expected; bring pets indoors
  • Signal 8 (Gale/Storm) — gale-force winds; stay indoors, businesses close
  • Signal 9-10 (Hurricane) — extreme danger; take shelter immediately

Build a Pet Emergency Kit

Prepare a waterproof emergency kit containing:

  • At least 5-7 days of pet food and fresh water
  • Medications your pet takes regularly
  • Copies of vaccination records and health certificates in a sealed bag
  • Recent photos of your pet (in case of escape)
  • Carrier or crate for each pet
  • Leash, collar with ID tag, and harness
  • Litter and waste bags
  • First aid supplies

Before the Storm Hits

  1. Bring all outdoor pets inside well before Signal 3 is raised
  2. Secure windows and balcony doors — terrified pets may try to escape
  3. Move pet areas away from windows in case of glass breakage
  4. Ensure microchip information is up to date
  5. Identify pet-friendly shelters or hotels in case of evacuation

Managing Storm Anxiety

Many pets experience severe anxiety during thunderstorms and typhoons. Signs include trembling, hiding, destructive behaviour, and loss of appetite. Create a safe, quiet space with familiar bedding and toys. Calming products such as anxiety wraps, pheromone diffusers, or prescribed anti-anxiety medication can help. Consult your vet before the season starts if your pet has a history of storm anxiety.

After the Storm

Check your surroundings before letting pets outside. Fallen debris, downed power lines, contaminated water, and displaced wildlife pose hazards. Inspect your pet for injuries and contact Royal Veterinary Center if you notice anything unusual.
