Bringing Your Pet to Macau
Relocating to Macau with a pet requires careful planning and preparation. Whether you are moving from Hong Kong, mainland China, or overseas, understanding the import requirements will help ensure a smooth transition for your furry family member. Royal Veterinary Center assists many expatriate families with the pet import process every year.
Import Requirements
To bring a dog or cat into Macau, you will need the following:
- Microchip — ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip is required
- Rabies vaccination — current and valid, administered after microchipping
- Rabies titre test — required for pets arriving from non-exempt countries; blood sample must be taken at least 30 days after vaccination
- Health certificate — issued by an accredited veterinarian within 10 days of travel
- Import permit — apply through the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) at least two weeks before arrival
Quarantine Rules
Macau does not typically impose quarantine for pets arriving from low-risk countries with proper documentation. However, pets from high-risk rabies countries may face quarantine of up to four months. Pets arriving from Hong Kong generally enjoy a simplified process given Hong Kong's rabies-free status.
Airline Pet Policies
Most airlines allow pets to travel as checked baggage or cargo. Some smaller carriers permit cabin travel for small dogs and cats in an airline-approved carrier. Book well in advance as pet spaces are limited, especially during summer months when heat restrictions apply. Macau's nearest major airport is Macau International (MFM), though many expats fly via Hong Kong (HKG) for more flight options.
Settling In
- Pet-friendly housing — check building regulations; not all Macau residential buildings allow pets
- Registration — dogs must be registered with IAM and wear a valid licence tag
- Local vet — register with a trusted clinic like Royal Veterinary Center for ongoing care
- Pet culture — Macau has a growing pet-friendly community with parks, cafes, and pet shops
