- Brown gums and weakness
- Tremors or seizures
- Naphthalene smell on breath
What to do
Come in immediately if a mothball was swallowed; one ball can poison a cat or small dog. Bring the packet so we can identify the type.
Macau note
Common in Macau wardrobes against humidity. Mothballs may be naphthalene (most dangerous, causes methaemoglobinaemia), paradichlorobenzene (less toxic) or camphor (causes seizures), so bring the packet to identify the type. Cats walking through treated cupboards also absorb it by grooming their paws.
